Aspectos químicos del sistema bentónico del golfo San Jorge, Argentina (2005-2010) OceanDocs
Fernández, M.B.; Cucchi Colleoni, A.D..
Chemical aspects of the San Jorge Gulf benthic system, Argentina (2005-2010). A new contribution on the chemical aspects of the San Jorge Gulf benthic system in the distribution area of shrimp Pleoticus muelleri (Spence Bate, 1888) during 2005-2010 is presented. Concentration of dissolved oxygen in bottom water and mix layer and of total organic matter (TOM), total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), chlorophyll a (Chl a) and phaeopigments (Phaeo) in surficial sediments were analyzed. The origin and nutritional value of TOM deposited were also assessed through the C:N ratio. Water samples were collected during the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP) seasonal research cruises in the period 2005-2010. Sediment samples...

Biomasa y distribución espacial del bacterioplancton en el sector norte de la plataforma continental argentina (34º S-41º S) OceanDocs
Hozbor, M.C.; Hernández, D.R.; Cucchi Colleoni, A.D.; Costagliola, M.C.; Peressutti, S.R..
The northern sector of the Argentine continental shelf (34º S-41º S) is a highly productive area that sustains important fishery resources like Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) and is characterized by the presence of frontal zones with retention of detritus and plankton. In marine environments the bacterioplankton represents one of the main components of the trophic nets and plays a key role in biogeochemical cycles. In this ecosystem biomass and bacterioplankton distribution as well as their relation to environmental variables were analyzed. The highest chlorophyll a values, not significantly related to bacterioplankton (p > 0.05), were found in frontal and coastal areas. Abundance, bacterial biomass and cell volume values ranged 0.48-5.42 x 106...

Estructura de la comunidad del fitoplancton en el área de El Rincón, Mar Argentino (febrero 2011) OceanDocs
Negri, R.M.; Silva, R.I.; Segura, V.; Cucchi Colleoni, A.D..
The El Rincón area in the Argentine continental shelf (coastal sector between 39º S-41º S) is known as one of the main breeding areas of the Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) Northern stock. However, there is scarce information regarding the structure of the primary producers, base of the pelagic food webs. The aim of this study was to identify the different phytoplanktonic communities in a coastal section in the area (depth lower than 60 m) during February 2011. Mean surface chlorophyll a concentration was 0.72 mg m-3, with the highest value in the innermost station (E34: 1.84 mg m-3) and the lowest in the mid section (E31: 0.24 mg m-3). In depth, similar concentrations were registered, except for the deepest station where the maximum value was...

Presencia de veneno paralizante de moluscos en higado de caballa de la región costera bonaerense OceanDocs
Carreto, J.I.; Akselman, R.; Cucchi Colleoni, A.D.; Carignan, M.O.; Pájaro, M..
During november 1992 an intense bloom of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense accurred in coastal waters from Mar del Plata, Argentina. Toxicity testing of Mytilus edulis populations of the region revealed high levels of paralytic shellfish poison. In order to study the possible PSP accumulation in mackerel (Scomber japonicus), mouse bioassay(AOAC) was performed in livers from individuals captured during December 1992. Liver extracts were lethal to mice; the sumptoms observed were typical of those caused by paralytic shellfish toxins. Although PSPS concentration is below the established limit for human consumption, it suggests that mackerel can accumulate PSP toxins from its food. On the basis of stomach content analysis of sampled mackerel and...
